Acoustic Panels |
|
(Aichi Prefectural Art Theater / Concert Hall) |
Acoustic panels are indispensable when classical or other music is performed in multi-purpose theaters, to ensure that the beautiful tones are carried effectively to the audience. The acoustic effects needed for conveying the sound from the stage to the audience differ, depending on the kind of performance. A clear sound with dampened reverberation is required when the human voice is featured, as with plays and lectures, or when electric amplification is employed, as in the case of rock concerts or similar productions. Acoustic performances, however, feature more delicate tones. The appropriate amount of natural reverberation enables the subtle world of acoustic music to come alive. Acoustic panels are mechanisms designed to ensure that the appropriate amount of reverberation occurs. |
| When acoustic panels are not being used, they can be stored either by hoisting them up above-stage in sections (in the case of hanging panels) or moving them to the back of the stage (in the case of sliding panels). Many large theaters employ a mechanism by which their acoustic panels can be arranged differently to suit large or small ensembles. This enables adjustment of the effective space which the acoustic panels surround. |

| Sliding Panels (Shell Type) |
| Sliding acoustic panels combine ceiling, side and front panels in a single, arch-shaped unit, which is stored backstage. When they are to be used, they travel upstage along rails, to pre-set positions. Structurally, this type of acoustic panel requires space backstage for storage. Its benefit is that it does not need any storage space in the flies, thus enabling greater freedom in the layout of Rigging System (lighting battens, scenery battens, etc.).

| Hanging Panels |
| Hanging acoustic panels are suspended from and stored in the space above the stage (the flies). They are lowered into pre-set positions for use. The storage area, method of dividing and arranging, and means of moving hanging panels - which are composed of ceiling, side (stage right and left) and front panels - is customized to fit the size of the stage, relationship with other flied sets and other conditions. |

| Ceiling Panels (with Monitors) |
| Ceiling acoustic panels are installed in the space above the stage, to make it easier for performers to hear themselves playing. |
