The "orchestra pit" is the area located between the stage and the audience, used by musical ensembles when operas, ballets or musicals are performed. "Orchestra elevators" are the lift mechanisms located in orchestra pits. Permanent "orchestra boxes" are sometimes built in performance halls designed especially for operas, ballets or musicals. In multi-use, free-space halls, however, it is common to have orchestra elevators installed in the orchestra pit. An orchestra elevator affords multiple uses. It can be employed as the orchestra pit; it can also be raised to the height of the stage to form a stretched stage or apron stage; or, it can be raised to the height of the audience floor and used for seating. |
